2013 chardonnay

Cerqueira Vineyard - Black Sage Gravel Bar - Wild Yeast

Tasting Notes

Aromas of truffle oil and grapefruit stand out on this wine.  On the palate there are distinct savoury notes of sage (very Okanagan!) and wet stone. The texture is very oily and full with a chalky finish.

The fruit was harvested in pristine shape and whole cluster pressed on Oct. 18.  We achieved excellent vine balance in 2013, allowing healty yeast populations to develop in the vineyard, and consequently a healthy wild yeast ferment was conducted, though not without some winemaker anxiety; - it was a long and stressed ferment that in the end created great character.  The wine was racked from its lees almost immedately after fermentation, with no further treatment until filtration prior to bottling.

Vineyard Notes

On the lower side of Black Sage Road betweek Oliver and Osoyoos, this vineyard has a gentle West facing slope.  The sols are a dense loam with limestone (calcuim carbonate) covered granite cobbles throughout a deep profile.  With the rough surface of the calcuim carbonate, water stressed vine roots seek out these rocks for the small amount of water to be found on this surface.

Vintage Notes

2013 is a story of two vintages in one.  With weather conditions that favoured ripening through the growing season, grapes were galloping into ripemess at a very early date.  Early ripening varieties began harvest even earlier than normal. leading to tropical and primary fruit aromas in the eventual wines, and tight harvesting windows for optimal ripemess.  Cool weather set in late September for the rest of the vintage however, slowing down the process for the late ripening varieties which ended up being harvested on typical dates for those varieties.  This was good, especially for the reds which were allowed to have their phenolic (especially tannin) ripeness to properly develop with the added hang time.
