2015 Merlot

Tasting Notes

Concentrated, smoky aromas of chocolate, anise, and blackberry continue on the palate. Typical of the 2015 vintage, the texture of this wine is very dense and concentrated, with slightly edgy tannins. The tannins soften through a long minerally finish.

Bud burst occured evently by April 23, 2017. Blossom was recorded at 75% complete by June 11, with no remarkable weather events to interrupt this. Fruit set was even and complete by June 24. Hardenning on the canes was observed by July 19, and continued through the fall. Veraison was recorded by August, 1. The grapes were harvested September 24-29, with average brix of 25.8, pH of 3.74, TA of 5.6. The grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed directly into 5 ton open top fermenters, allowed a spontaneous fermentation, and pumped over twice a day. Maceration time was 34 days, at which point the wine was pressed, settled, and racked to barrels for ageing. Two clarifying rackings took place before bottling in March 2017.

Vineyard Notes

Below Black Sage road between Oliver and Osoyoos, this vineyard has a gentle West-facing slope. The soils are dense loam topsoil above gravel with limestone (calcium carbonate) covered granite, quartz and bassalt cobbles throughout a deep profile. Irrigation and ground water accept minerals from these rocks, and in turn, deliver these to the vines, causing a profound effect on the grapes. The Merlot blocks were planted Spring of 2006 & 2008.
